Facts about Port Moody
Port Moody is a very unique place within the Metro Vancouver area. I may be biased, as I used to live in Port Moody, and now live on the border between Port Moody and Coquitlam and have raised my family here for the past 10 years.
My favourite part about Port Moody is the ocean access, and the two adorable European style shopping villages called Suterbrook Village and Newport Village. Port Moody is also surrounded by fresh air and nature with the mountains, lakes, rivers and trails as park of people's daily lifestyle. Port Moody has easy access to downtown Vancouver via the Skytrain, the West Coast Express, or an easy 20-30 minute drive via car, as well as easy access to the Fraser Valley. Port Moody is considered a smaller municipality within the Metro Vancouver area, with a population of approximately 34,000, giving it that small town community feel within a larger urban area. People are proud to be from Port Moody. The families know each other and each others kids. You will see familiar faces while out shopping or taking a walk.
Port Moody has a very interesting history. Early settler history in Port Moody was dominated by both the 1858 gold rush in the Fraser Valley and the 1886 arrival of the first transcontinental train. Port Moody had an “early moment of fame” in the newly formed nation of Canada. In 1879, the town was officially named western terminus for the Canadian Pacific Railway. However, due the mountainous region which would limit urbanization, it was decided to expand the CP Rail to the more western point of Vancouver (present day Gastown).
